HEAL loans were discontinued as of 1998. From 1978 to 1998, the federal Health Education Assistance Loan Program (HEAL) provided insurance for loans made by participating lenders to eligible graduate students in medical and health-related fields. It was administered by the federal Department of Health and Human Services. There are special terms and rules that apply to these loans.
The HEAL program was transferred from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Department of Education in July 2014. The Department of Education web site has a number of important HEAL forms, including deferment and disability request forms. In addition to forms, the Department has a separate web site section with information about HEAL loans, including maximum interest rates.
